Maki Oh: Proving That Africa Is More Than Ankara

I'm in love with Maki Oh. I have been for a while and it's high time I did a feature on what could be the greatest womenswear designer to come out of Nigeria. What I love about Maki Oh is that designer Amaka Osakwe completely tears apart the notion that African design is all big prints and ankara. I'm not the only one crushing on Maki Oh, her designs have been spotted on fashionista Solange Knowles and she was crowned 'Arise Magazine Designer of the Year' for her AW12 collection.

All her collections are based around narratives, and her latest offering 'Dear Submission' explores the theme of restraint and journeys through the four stages of discipline, breaking rules along the way. The result is high collar shirts, apron dresses in chiffon, lace and leather, cut out dresses in velvet and lace hem shorts. All very sexy. Check out images of the full collection at maki-oh.com and let me know what you think over on the Facebook page. Sadly there are no UK retailers at present, but fingers crossed they will come soon.
