I have been on the hunt for a friendly professional hair salon that can handle my natural tresses for a while now. With a little help from noscrunchie.com, I found Adornment365 Natural Hair and Loc Bar. It's a natural hair salon conveniently located in Brixton with great online reviews. I've had my fair share of bad salon experiences but I was still excited to book my first appointment and see what they could do.

Booking The Appointment
As this was my first time at the salon, I decided to go for a basic wash, trim and blowout. I called the salon and was greeted by a polite and professional receptionist. She detailed the cost of the treatment which was £38.50 and told me my stylist on the day would be Colleen. She took a £10 deposit for the treatment, which I paid by card over the phone. I also received a text reminder closer to date, providing details of the appointment. So far, so good.
The Salon: First Impressions
When I got to the salon, to say I was impressed would be an understatement. It's a tidy, beautiful space with a boutique feel. A far cry from some of the hovels parading as salons that I have found myself in. When I came in, I was greeted warmly by a member of staff who took my coat and introduced me to my stylist Colleen.
There was thankfully no waiting around to be seen. Colleen led me to the sink and got straight to work. I had been wearing my hair in a puff all week and was surprised that she didn't attempt to detangle my hair before washing. I was concerned it would be knot central post wash but I kept my thoughts to myself and hoped Colleen knew what she was doing.
After a very thorough wash, a generous amount of conditioner was smoothed through my hair and Colleen spent some time finger detangling my hair. After a quick rinse, I was ready for my blowdry. I couldn't believe how soft and tangle free my hair was. Colleen told me the trick was using a lot of conditioner and leaving a little bit in.
Before my blowdry, whipped shea butter was applied to my scalp and the excess was smoothed through my hair. Working in sections, Colleen blow-dried my hair using the comb attachment. It was on a medium setting and didn't take very long at all.
Once my hair was dry, it was time for my trim. Colleen asked how much I wanted off which I thought was a nice touch. I've had too many appointments at other salons were the stylists trim as much as they fancy. I only wanted a little dusting so she took about a centimetre off the ends.
Trim complete, she combed through my hair with a wide tooth comb and put it into a ponytail for me. I wasn't looking to get my hair styled this time round so this worked for me.
I was really pleased with my overall experience at Adornment365. The blow out was great and my ends are finally in much better shape.
Mostly I was impressed by the service from the staff at Adornment365. I do think black women are given the short straw when it comes to service at salons and hair shops but not this time. Everyone was really friendly, attentive and professional which instantly put me at ease. I was offered a lovely herbal tea as I got my blow out and it was nice to see regulars popping in just to say hello. For me that is the mark of a quality establishment.
My only criticism which may seem a bit strange is that no one tried to sell me anything! I'm so used to being offered products or additional treatments that I came prepared with extra funds just in case. I can only assume my hair was in such great condition, it didn't need anything else.
I would definitely go back to Adornment365. I'm already thinking ahead to my next appointment, maybe Marley twists or a little colour? You can check out their full list of services at http://adornment365-2.myshopify.com or pop in and see them at 81 Acre Lane, Brixton SW2 5TN.
