Travelling is one of my favourite things to do but I do not enjoy flying. A cold metal tube filled with farting strangers and that one wailing baby for 10 hours - urgh! As if that wasn't traumatic enough, the whole experience wreaks havoc on your natural hair. These simple tips have saved me on multiple occasions.
1. Do your prep
Be sure to pamper your tresses pre flight. Treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment, trim your ends, do a hot oil treatment. You want to give your hair the works so it's super hydrated as cabin conditions will be very drying.
2. Short term protective styles are your friends
Prior to any long haul flight I do a protective style that can weather the journey and still look great after I disembark. My go to is chunky two strand twists. I love this style because I can pin it up for the flight and then rock a twist out on my holiday. I prefer short term protective styles because I can change up my look easily while I'm away.
3. There is no shame in your durag game
Yes, I whip out my wrap on the plane. Lying back on a headrest for 10 hours plus is a recipe for dry frizzy hair and tangles. I wrap my hair so I can relax on the flight without worrying about how it'll look when I land. Yes I get looks but I also get looks when I rock my big ass fro. You've got to take the rough with the smooth.
4. Moisture, moisture, moisture
Decant some of your favourite products into under 50 ml containers so you can pop them into your hand luggage. That way if your hair is feeling dry, you can give it a quick boost. Also don't forget to keep your body hydrated as well. Healthy body, healthy hair.
5. It's all about the bun
When all else fails, throw it in a bun and get on with the business of in flight movies. Your ends will thank you and you can protect edges by slipping on a satin scarf. Don't go too tight and aim for a top knot so you can catch some zzz's in comfort.
