All summer I promised myself that I would be good to my hair. I was going to wear it in cornrows, keep my ends tucked away and deep condition on the reg. What actually happened was months of wash & go's, high puffs and lazy girl wash days. I may have got the wash & go down to a science but this has resulted in a head of very unhappy hair. Wondering if your hair is unhappy too? These are the not so subtle hints your hair gives when it needs a break.
Increased Amounts of Shed Hair
When detangling, it's perfectly normal to shed hair. However I began to notice that the ball of hair at the end of these sessions are getting bigger and bigger. I can only conclude that aside from the natural shedding I am also experiencing more breakage.
I have always prided myself on having pretty durable ends. It's a weird thing to be proud of but let me live. Anyway, they have started to break and I have spied more than a couple of split ends. Before I pack my hair away, I'll be getting a trim as no amount of protective styling can revive damaged ends.
Lots of Single Strand Knots aka Fairy Knots
SSKs are the worst. I know they are part and parcel of the natural hair experience but I can't stand them. They weaken the strand and often lead to breakage. These knots tend to form when your hair is particularly dry. If you notice more than usual, then you need to give your hair a little TLC.
Rat Tail Ends
Healthy hair when twisted should be roughly the same thickness from beginning to end. You may have damaged ends if your twists tapers off dramatically and looks like, for lack of a better description, a rats tail. At the moment my hair is sadly infested with rat tails.
My hair is naturally dry, that is its nature and I am fine with it. However when it starts to feel like a fresh out the pack Brillo pad, I know I'm in trouble. The primary cause is usually not moisturising enough but if you are sure you do then it could be a reaction to your products or an environmental issue. Figure out which fast as excessive dryness leads to breakage.
Minimal Length Retention
My hair has stopped growing waaahhhhh! In the last year, my length hasn't changed much and this is the clearest sign that my hair needs a break and a big one at that. I love my expansive fro but I want it BIGGER. Right now I'm still hanging around armpit length (when stretched) and I would like to reach middle of the back length by this time next year.
For the next 3 months, I'll be in protective styles but I'm also going to be updating my wash day routine and introducing more healthy hair practices. As per usual, I'll be sharing all right here on the blog.
