This post was originally going to be a list of cool Halloween costume ideas with an African twist. I was thinking Fela Kuti, Lupita Nyong'o at the Met Gala or one of the Real Housewives of Lagos.
My research however led me down to a dark and dismal corner of the internet where only bad culturally insensitive things happen. If you ever make the mistake of Googling 'African costumes', you will be greeted with grass skirts, spears, leopard print togas, bone necklaces and enough blackface to make you scream.
In 2016, the definition of Africa is still somehow linked to 'the savage'. A primitive club wielding caveman. This is not OK. This is a myth conjured up by racists that I thought had long been forgotten.
By donning one of these costumes, you perpetuate the idea of Africans as violent and backwards. You reduce our rich tribal heritage to a mere caricature. It's appalling and highly offensive.
This isn't cultural appropriation. This is straight up racist. I would hope I am preaching to the choir here but seriously DON'T DO THIS.
