It's International Women's Day and what better time to shout out the women who inspire and motivate me to hustle harder. These women in some shape or form have impressed me with their work ethic and generally awesome womanhood. Let's get into it!
What can I say about Chimamanda that hasn't been said already. She is a powerful feminist whose books speak to me on an emotional level. No other literature has come close to my experience as a Nigerian woman living in the diaspora. I'm going to see her speak at WOW this weekend, I am beyond excited.
When I first started this blog and was looking for brands to showcase, Sapelle was one of the first I found. Daphne Kasambala has been running Sapelle for a long time and the passion she has for designers from Africa has been unwavering. Her commitment is admirable and motivates me to keep doing what I do.
Oloni created an online platform for women to discuss sex and relationships. In a world where women are trolled for simply existing online that in and of itself is impressive.
By keeping things anonymous, she encouraged a lot of women to be frank about the realities of modern dating. I would love to be that honest and brave in my work.
Founder of Black Ballad, Tobi Oredein has been taking mainstream media to task about the under representation of black women. Her platform puts black women and our narratives at the centre. This is a woman boldly taking up space and encourages me to do the same.
The first time I watched Chewing Gum, I clutched my chest because I wasn't ready. Created by Michaela Coel, this show speaks to the experience of young black Brit and in a delightfully humorous way. I'd given up on writing fiction and this reignited my passion.
